"Scotland for beginners" is a misleading title, the subtitle is more apt: As you need to know a lot about British history to really enjoy " and all that", you need to know a lot about Scotland to really enjoy this book.

I think I got about half of the jokes, but half is already a lot of fun/5. Jeff Fallow does good work here. He takes the complex world of Scottish history with all of it's twists, turns, and outrages and makes enjoyable reading for the newly interested. I read this book over a year ago, and still refer to it from time to time.

Told as a series of humorous vignettes, Scotland for Beginners takes us on a sentimental journey through "auld Dundee" as Max struggles to decipher Scots dialect; buys school clothes from the formidable Miss Hannah at the Peter Street Co-op, and heroically endures the tortures of organised games at the Junior Boys Brigade.5/5(1).

The next thing to organise is booking the ferry. Again, this can be challenging. For example, I recently visited the Small Isles over 5 days. In order to get to the Isle of Muck, I had to get an early Caledonian MacBrayne ferry at Mallaig that called at the Isle of Eigg, then went to Muck.

Because that was the only ferry that day, I had to book a return journey with Arisaig Marine that sailed. After a day of kayaking in Scotland, it’s nice to return to your cosy accommodation to relax in the evenings, enjoying comfortable rooms and hearty meals.

Trip Highlights Combine adventure with comfort as you enjoy day trips sea kayaking and hiking, returning to overnight at a Highland Inn, set on the shores of spectacular Loch Torridon. Doric for Beginners is a fun, colourful and imaginative book that gently guides the reader through an understanding of the dialect used throughout the North East of Scotland and beyond.

The author, Karen Barrett-Ayres, offers up a unique visual treat that'll soon have you spikkin awa in the mither-tongue.
